Clip to ScrapBook #1

What are some activities that you do with all of your ESL students at the beginning of the year?

I am looking for things to help build community and begin building self-esteem.

I am wondering if a glyph would be appropriate for ages K-5?
This would help me to also understand how much they understand English directions.

I think a glyph would be completely appropriate - a great way to find out how much they know/remember. Try to incorporate colors, numbers, stuff like that. Do you get your students levels? If so, try to come up with a template for the kids to fill in, and make a classroom book. I try to make sure that my activities include lots of picture drawing at the beginning of the year, or with new students.
