Clip to ScrapBook #1

I was JUST told(a week before school starts) that I'm being moved from 2nd to 5th grade.

This is my first year in 5th grade. I have no idea how to implement writing or CLI, having been a 2nd grade teacher.

I can adapt with Reading, Math Science and Social Studies, so I'm not really worried about those subjects.

Any help is appreciated.

I give the kids some writing tool sheets that I got from Melissa Forney's Razzle Dazzle Writing books. I give them a sample simile/metaphor sheet, a transition word list, an editing checklist, a sheet that shows how to turn sentences around in different ways, and a sheet with sensory words. I print them all on different colors and we call them their colorful word sheets.

I do Paragraph of the Week (you can google it) and have them write a paragraph every week. They have to have between 5 and 8 sentences and start every sentence with a different word. We talk a lot about sentence variety and adding those figurative language extras, like similes, metaphors, idioms, and hyperbole to paint word pictures for the reader (hence the colorful sheets).

We will also write a narrative story focused on setting (which ties to our first round of novel choices), an expository, a poetry book, a research paper, and a persuasive paper. The research paper is by far the most difficult thing, so make sure you give very explicit instructions!

The grading is definitely the most challenging, because to be effective, you have to read every word of every paper! Give lots of specific feedback, and point them to the tools you give them if they forget something.

I taught 4 gr for 9 years before spending 2 years in 2nd grade. Now I'm going to 5th. What I found that really worked for systematic writing in 4th - although a bit robotic at first - is The 4 Square Method. I plan to go back to it. It's great for teaching kids the basic elements of an essay and teaches them how to include details and the different purposes. Good Luck!
