motivational song or poem

I'm at my first teaching position and I just found out that I need to come up with a song or poem for motivation. We, as a class, are to learn this song and recite daily. Anyone have any ideas? I'm teaching 5th grade.

Mission Statement

Clip to ScrapBook #2

Every year I have my students collaborate to create a classroom mission statement. In it they work in teams to come up with the answers to three questions:

1) Who are we?

They come up with really great answers - responsible students, the people of the future etc.

2) Why are we here?

They must give at least three reasons why they are in school - to get an excellent education, to change the world, to become successful in the world of work, etc.

3) How will we accomplish our goals?

They must say how they will meet their goals - by working smart, by working as a team, by listening to our parents and our teacher, etc.

Final part - The last part is to tell what good this will be - in order to change our world for better, in order to help other people reach their goals, etc.

Once accomplished, the kids vote on the words that will be in the mission statement, and from that day on, it is recited by every student, every day! They must live by their own words. It really provides unity and a sense of pride for my students. They love it every year.

last year's mission statement, created the first days of school, by my 6th grade students:

We are children who have a voice. We are here to make smart choices and change the world. We will accomplish our goals by believing in ourselves and never giving up so we can make the world a better place.

I even did this activity when I taught second and third grade students.

I don't know about every day...but I keep this on the outside of my door and read it to my class at the beginning of the year. Maybe it would work for what you need?

On the Other Side of the Door

On the other side of the door
I can be a different me,
As smart and as brave and as funny or strong
As a person could want to be.
There's nothing too hard for me to do,
There's no place I can't explore
Because everything can happen
On the other side of the door

On the other side of the door
I don't have to go alone.
If you come, too, we can sail tall ships
And fly where the wind has flown.
And wherever we go, it is almost sure
We'll find what we're looking for
Because everything can happen
On the other side of the door. (Jeff Moss)

Motto

I taught at a school that had a motto where they said "high expectations no limitations". They would say this every morning on the morning announcements. Then you may have to ask the students what high expectations mean and what no limitations mean so that they can put a meaning to the phrase that they are saying. It is short and to the point .

I LOVE the mission statement idea.... We have a school wide motto as well that the student say after the morning announcements. It's sweet and simple - "I believe I can achieve!! "

5th Grade Pledge of Respect
Old 08-31-2010, 07:23 PM

Clip to ScrapBook #8

My kids put their right hands up and recite the following pledge each morning.

I am a smart valuable person.
I respect myself and I respect others.
My words and actions are kind and honest.
I accept only my best in all I do.
I am proud to be me!

Great Ideas! ... I have my students come up with 5-6 classroom rules for the year. I write them down after we vote, and they all have to sign the rules. It shows that they are responsible for not breaking their own rules during the year.
