We have a reading specialist person for our district inservices this year and she provided us with a GREAT way to get books in kids hands and get them excited about them and thought I should share!
Each day - choose 3-4 books (guided reading/simple text books)
Begin to read it aloud to the kids encouraging them to join in. Stop and look at the last couple pages and make faces, noises, think aloud,
* Oh my! I can't believe this ending!
* Yikes! I hope that doesn't happen!
* That sure has happened to me before!
Don't read the last pages or show them the pages.
Ask "who would like this book to put in their book box to read later?"
Give it to a student to put in their book box for later.
The kids LOVE gift book time daily!!!
I paperclip a small slip of paper inside the front cover of each book with all the children's names. Then cross off the student's name who you give it to. They then continue to cross off the next name of the list and pass the book on until everyone had a chance. It then goes into the "ALL DONE GIFT BOOK BOX."
Just an idea to share!
