This will be my 1st year attempting to do both reading and math groups..........What does your schedule look like? How often do you change the content/activities in your centers? Do your students work on the same skill for a week and then it gets changed? What types of activities do you use? I mean are they all created by you? Or do you have pre-made out of a box type centers?

I feel like I'm trying to re-create the wheel when it comes to organizing/planning centers and group work! HELP!

I have to admit, I don't know how to manage my short day and still include time for both reading and math groups. Once you add up all the minutes it takes to teach the curriuclum, and account for the minutes we have to overlap with another class, there isn't enough time for everything! To compensate, I combine things. We can only do centers Mon-Thurs, so there are 4 rotations. I make sure that 2 are literacy related and at least one is math. I sometimes do science or social studies related things.

I found it difficult my first year to get started, especially sinice I was in an 1/2 a classroom meant to be used for someone's office. Unlike the rooms in the K building, I didn't have any manipulatives or materials for centers. I also didn't have space for things. I observed the other teachers to see what they were doing. In the beginning, they let me borrow some of their materials. They gave me parts of their housekeeping/kitchen sets and we rotated pieces throughout the year. They found extra pattern blocks for me to use throughout the year. I did spent my own money (quite a lot!)purchasing magnetic foam alphabet letters (I like the foam ones the best), letters to stamp with, teddy bears, linking cubes, and various puzzles. Oh, yeah. And books (garage sale and Scholastic orders). I do have some premade center activities I have purchased, which I love. My only problem is that our class sizes grew from 20 to 32, and I couldn't purchase or make enough items for the whole class to use.

There are so many options of things to do! You will get the hang it after a month, so don't worry! Start off small. For example, my first week, I might have a table with playdough, a table with a name activity, one floor puzzle, and blocks. What I choose for each table depends on how much help I get for the week. As the year progresses, it gets more academic and less manipulative work. If I have no help, I try to do easier things. I try to have one cutting activity out, but if there is more help, I can have 2.

Try looking at teacher's websites or blogs for ideas. There are so many out there! Also, look at the Debbie Diller books for ideas. Here are some of my favorite websites:
