Hi.
I'm new to the board and would appreciate any advice on keeping it simple my first year back as a full-time teacher. I have enjoyed looking at all the posts on this 5th grade board but it is pretty overwhelming to think about being completely ready in a mere month and a half! I would welcome any advice you could give on how to take it slowly...what are the most important things to consider in my planning for this year? What are the basics? I know I have the potential to be a great teacher but I also don't want to try to do it all now. (I've been asked to use Responsive Classroom for management.) Oh yeah, and I'm a mom of 7 with 5 still at home, in case that helps complete the picture.
Thanks again!

I have taught 5th for almost 20 years!
Are you going to be departmentalized, semi-departmentalized, or self contained?

For the most part, I will be self-contained. The 4th grade teacher across the hall is also new and we may each take one subject (Math? Social Studies?) and teach each other's kids to cut down on the need to plan for all subjects.

I suggest:

creating procedures for your classroom(Harry Wong) so classroom management allows for mastery teaching
being very familiar with your ELA and math curriculums
emphasizing the writing process
informing parents on a regular basis(schoolnotes, perhaps)

Thanks for your good ideas. I've been spending time on PT and it's been a godsend for preparing to teach in the fall.

Know your curriculum
Know your standards
Don't be afraid to try something new
If you have a Smart Board please use it for more than a screen to view a video
Give them time to read every single day
Read to them EVERY SINGLE DAY!
If time permits, read the Book Whisperer
Most of all, enjoy the kids and enjoy yourself

I second that - read The Book Whisperer. It's a really easy read. I read it in two sittings. It will make you very excited to teach reading and give you a good picture for how reading can look in your classroom.
