I've never taught 3rd but I went from first to fifth and loved it for the most part. Had a partner from you know where that kind of ruined it... But I loved the curriculum, the independence, etc.

I was moved back to first after one year due to numbers since I had all the experience in first...

Currently doing a 1/2 combo for the 2nd year in a row and think I am going to be forced to do it yet again... I would LOVE to get to choose what to teach! I think I might actually like my job again if I could choose!

I went from 2nd to 5th two years ago; fifth grade curriculum was the hardest part for me, definitely has more meat than 2nd grade. I enjoy it!

You'll love 5th grade! I did all my college observations and teaching in the primary grades so I thought those were the grades I wanted until I got my job teaching 5th. They are so much fun (well on most days!). I teach at a rural school district so my 5th grade is probably a lot different than an urban school district 5th grade - behavior wise, but they kids are so great and still want to be in school. They still look up to you as a teacher and want to please you.

As the intervention specialist, I love teaching 5th. It's a lot more academic and I enjoy that challenge. In Ohio we are tested in reading, math, and science (and in a few years they are brining back social studies). I have a great group of kids this year. They are so much more emotional/hormonal. Right now, spring fever is coming. .

The biggest problem some of my 5th grade team faces is lack of effort--they say they are "lazy". Some don't turn in homework--parents don't care. They take away recess--kids don't care--for some not all kids. Some want to learn and some have their mind elsewhere. I also see a bigger focus on organization--they have more responsibility (homework, classwork, etc.).

Good luck in your decision.

I went from 1st to 3rd to fifth and fifth is my favorite. There is a maturity there that cannot be found in other grades, but there is still the love of learning and fondness for their teacher. I also have enjoyed the academics in fifth grade. You can really stretch them and do a lot of skill building.

I went from 3rd to 5th a few years ago (not by choice). I was apprehensive because I thought I wanted to work with the little ones. I LOVE 5th and wouldn't go back to 3rd. 5th graders are independent and they follow directions. We have deep conversations and they understand sarcasm and wit. It's just a lot of fun! I did have to step up the academics and go back and re-learn a lot (especially the science - ugh!) but its worth it!!

Doing Reverse!

I might be doing the reverse! I might be going from 5th to 3rd next year! OR 5th to 1st!!!!!!!!

I love all grades, but as a first year teacher, I'd love to stay in 5th for one more year since I've learned so much this year, especially things that grade/curriculum specific! I could do a much better job next year now that I have had this year to get familiar with things! Maybe one of the other 5th grade teachers will take the 3rd or 1st or opening! Doubt it, though...

At least I get to choose!

I can't imagine being forced to choose. Fortunately I have a choice! I've heard about attitude problems and testing issues but I think the curriculum would be so much more interesting in 5th.

Moving from 3rd to 5th

Three years ago, I moved from third to fifth grade. I enjoy the 5th grade students much more. They are more responsible and helpful. However, they can have much more attitude so be careful. I like the curriculum because it is more challenging. I got a little bored with the lower grades. I feel like I'm always learning something new myself!

I loved the change

This is my second year in 5th grade after teacher 3rd grade for 6 years. I was really nervous at first, but now I love the change!! For me it seemed a little less stressful because it wasn't the first year of testing for the kids, AND I was having the kids for a second time so I already new what to look out for as far as behaviors. I really enjoyed learning the new curriculum and I honestly feel like it made me a better teacher because I was having to learn something different from what I was used to doing. Good luck with the change!! I hope your experience is a positive one

Moved from 3rd to 5th this year

I moved from 3rd to 5th grade this year ( not by choice ) and I found it really hard. The math curriculum is a lot more challenging and the amount of curriculum that we are expected to cover is overwhelming. When you couple that with 5th grade pre-adolesense attitude I haven't been having very much fun

Fortunately next year I'm teaching 2nd grade which is my favorite

I say go for it! I taught 3rd grade for 4 years. I liked it, but I didn't love it. Then, I was bumped to 4th grade which I liked very much. This year I looped to 5th grade and I love it. The curriculum is great. I love the science and social studies the best. I think you will really enjoy it. Good luck!
