Summitted to the board but rejected

I just got a rejection letter for the teaching job where I was put through to the board of education. I'm so bummed. I had so much hope. I called and left a message with the superiendent for him to call me back because I would like feedback on what went wrong. (I am really hoping my former principal did not give me a bad recommendation!) I really wanted this job. Now I just want to cry.

I'm so sorry, I've never heard of the board rejecting a candidate. Generally once the principal/super recommends someone it's a done deal.

I hope everything works out for you. Please keep us posted.

BTW: I don't think it was a bad rec by your principal; if that was the case the principal/super wouldn't have even put your name through. I'm wondering if it was a numbers thing and they rescinded the offer. We just had that happen in my district. I truly don't think this was personal, I think this was a business thing.

Thank you. There were a few of us submitted for the same position. The board made their final decision.

So you're saying that the principal gave the board a couple of people to choose from, and they chose someone else? I've never heard of it happening that way, when the people making the final decision have never met the applicants.

That really stinks. I'm so sorry. You have my permission to cry. (It's what I would do!)

Hang in there!

When I moved up north, the principal submitted my name and another person's name to the board. Then we both had to interview with the super and the board members. I was offered the job. The other candidate did not get this position, but they called her a week later offering her another position that opened up suddenly. So hang in there -- if the prince recommended you, he liked you. Hopefully something else will open up.

During my second interview I met with the board members. Then 2 weeks later at the meeting they had to decide on their final choice. It's usually not done this way around here but it's a VERY small school district and I guess that's why they do it this way.

I'm hoping the superintendent calls me back so I can try to get a reason as to why I wasn't hired.

Nooo! That sounds bizarre...I've never heard of allowing the board a final say in who is hired, but I know that board members are often on interview panels. Keep your chin up, like I told hopeful, I was rejected from my first job, then offered it a week later because the numbers jumped and they needed another teacher. So...no isn't always no, it's just "not right now".

Thanks. There is still a possibility that I might get hired in a charter school. They called me on Tuesday telling me they are interested in my but are just waiting to hear back from one of my former principals. He better not screw this up for me.

that they could reject you without ever having met you.

I've never heard of the school board having any say in hiring decisions... except for higher level admin/superintendent type positions.

I'm really sorry that happened to you... I hope the charter school works out instead!

I've never heard of such ridiculousness. I have to say that I think they did you a favor. If they make you jump through such hoops for the job imagine what working for them would be like.

Good luck with your job search.

BTW: If you're worried about a past principal make sure you don't put him as a reference, just as a past employer!

Greyhoundgirl- I do not include him in my references but since that is my only public school teaching experience I have it listed on my resume that I worked there. During interviews I am usually asked who my principal was. I can't lie.

Talking to Super

I hope you get a straight answer if you talk to the Super. The higher-ups always seem to have a round-about way of not telling the whole truth.

Keep us posted and hopefully you'll be considered for another position.

Thanks but the more rejections I get, the more hope I loose. This process is so stressful.

At least you got an interview! In my district, they don't even do interviews. The Super or board decides who they want in the position and that is who they hire. Previous experience, qualifications, etc. do not matter in the slightest. I do not know a single teacher who was interviewed here. Some of them were not even aware they were hired until they read about it in the paper after the school board meeting.

I am so sorry to hear that=( Don't give up hope because the school year hasn't started yet for most school districts.

The superiendent returned my call today. He said that there was nothing I did wrong and nothing I could improve on. He said he loved all my answers and my experience was outstanding, and that I presented myself in a very professional way---however, it was a very hard decision for him and it came down to a few of us and someone else just came up on top. I asked if he contacted my former principal and he said no. He just went by the reference letters I provided him. He also said there was NOTHING I could have done differently.

Well, that is enlightening news to hear freom the super. This was probably just not the position that you are meant to have. Always remember that "When one door shuts, another one opens." God has bigger and brighter plans for your future. Just keep your head up and conduct yourself exactly the same as you did in this last interview and you will be sure to get the perfect job!!! Stay positive. I know that it is hard. I am going through the same thing myself...but if we don't stay positive, there is nothing to hope for.
