First of all, start in the right place by studying the standards for your grade level and determining what your curriculum materials will be. Check with your district. They may already have much of it mapped out for you.

Then using backward design, start creating your units, or big topics. Divide them so they will fit in the time frame of a school year.

Only after all your assessments, goals and objectives are mapped out should you start looking for activities, ideas and lesson plans. Google is your friend.

You will learn a lot more creating your own lessons and materials yourself rather than depending on others to give them to you. Yes, it will be hard and time consuming, but you will be a much better teacher for it.

Start with your state standards and any county curriculum guides for your grade. I encourage you to make it fun. My students hate just reading from the social studies textbook. I incorporate songs, plays, comics, poems and pictures into our lesson. We regularly examine primary sources. My students enjoy talking about what they read and completing projects. I find they learn more when I do less talking.

Thank you! I can see the whole incorporating songs and poems because these I enjoy myelf as well as maybe dance moves to help the students remember. Yes, when I student taught I did see that the students preferred to be more hands on instead of listening to instructions.
