Different way of thinking

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I gave a logic page to my 3rd graders today. It wasn't long before one student had circled the answer and said he was done. It was way too fast. He had no apparent strategy, just an answer. Now in the regular classroom I would have fussed and said you must show me your strategy. I started to do just that because I've only been in this role for a month and some of my "bad" habits haven't been corrected. So, the student says to me: "I knew it had to be that one because all the others had 'x's beside them." I took a look and again normally would be upset (mostly at myself) because I had obviously made copies of the answer page from the paper that I was working on yesterday.
I gave everyone the answer key. UGH!

So here is where I decided to just think differently. I took the paper from this student and acknowledged he was right. He solved it by ignoring the typical rules and directions and using a different kind of logical thinking.

The x's were so light I didn't even realize they all had the key.

So I love the new thinking and ended up praising him and watching for any others to figure it out. Only 1 other person noticed it and they had already done most of the thinking.

Instead of being aggravated I am actually impressed. So now I am the one thinking a little differently. How very interesting.
