VINDICATED!!!
We absolutely must stop this drill-n-kill, test til they drop mindset.

I absolutely agree with the message, but am floored by the findings, the repercussions.

Great article, and if you click on the actual study data it's very interesting. I think I had read this a couple of years ago and shared with my admin and teammates. Yet another reason I refuse to give up play/free choice time in the classroom. It is SO important for those babies to practice their social skills!

I fully agree! We over test in general in this country, but I'm already (this if my 1st year in K) so sick of testing, testing, testing these 5 year olds! I hardly have time to, you know, actually teach them anything. Much less the social/emotional skills it mentions. Does anyone know of good resources for incorporating teaching those skills in the classroom?

I counted the hours it took to test an entire class in trimester 1 benchmarks. The total number of hours was equivalent to one week of lost instructional time. Every test was one on one with me. There were 9 tests in Language Arts and one test in Math.

I let everyone play with each other the entire week while I tested.

I am thrilled to see this research and it confirms what many experienced teachers have always believed to be the most important for a child's success as an adult. Thanks for the link.
