Any tips for a long afternoon?

I have two chunks of instructional time: 8:00-10:30 and 12:25-2:45. All of our time out of the classroom is from 10:30-12:25 with lunch, recess, and specials. The first block is ELA, and it's fine.

My second chunk of time is SOOO hard - especially my math block (from 1:00-2:00). I am not able to change this because we are locked into a 12:25-1:00 block for any pullouts (which I do not have at the moment but may soon). My kids are so tired and cranky at this time, and my math instruction is suffering. Their behavior is through the roof then.

I have the same problem and use manipulatives, cooperative learning and white boards with pens. These tools keep the kids awake

I have math in the afternoon as well. My favorite math schedule has been

  1. whole group lesson 10-15 min
  2. game to practice/reinforce material 15 min
  3. problem solving (we have a problem solving journal that we do) 10-15 min
  4. math boxes 15-20 min - these are just different math games and hands-on activities that they can choose from - some years I assign partners and boxes, other years they just choose; I pull small groups or sit with kids during this time
Keeping it short and sweet helps a lot, as well as breaking up the "work" time with the games and manipulatives. Some years I decide to change it up and I always seem to come back to this.
