Clip to ScrapBook #1

Hello! I recently accepted a job as an ESL teacher. I will be working only with Kindergarten. I'm very excited about this job, but I'm also feeling like I'm not sure what to do! What materials are important for an ESL classroom? Any tips for the beginning of the year? etc...
I'd appreciate any input you have! Thank you!

Welcome to the world of ELL. There will be a lot for you to think about when school starts. Will you provide in class support or pull out? Small group instruction? What will the classroom teacher expect from you?

The Daily 5 book is a great management resource for ELL management and it is user friendly. I highly recommend this resource for success in managing your students!!

MATERIALS: The Daily 5 and books, books, and more books!! Read to students, have them read the pictures to you. Relate books to child's experiences. Engage them in conversation regarding the books!!

Good luck!!

I suggest preparing LOTS of pictures to help with vocabulary. I teach a full class of ELL students, and I find the beginning of the year is the most challenging, because most likely they were not using a lot of English over the summer. Just get ready to speak slowly at first, and use lots of hand motions while talking!

EDHelper has great worksheets in various languages. I believe costs about $30 to subscribe, it well worth the price. Good Luck!

Singing along to children's music CD's is great to do with kindergarteners. Fingerplays, where they have to use had gestures to say a poem is also fun.
Try a website such as Carl's Corner to find more ideas.
