What are some of the best excuses you've heard for not having work done or homework completed?

One I hear often is- "I couldn't do it because we went to the store."
So you went to the store from 4 PM-9 PM? That seems like a long time to grocery shop.

"We had to visit my mom's new boyfriend in jail."

I don't know if it's the "best", but it's definitely the most common:
I had _________(football, baseball,...) practice.

I always follow up with, "You had practice from the time you got home from school until you went to bed? How did you eat dinner? You must be exhausted!" Then I just grin and tell them they can do it at recess.

When I taught in a farm community in northern VT:

"We was killin' chickens last night."

"Our cows got out and I was chasin' em through the woods till 10 o'clock."
And the next day:
"I was fixin' the fence in the cow pasture."

In my more suburban/small town school:

"I didn't do my homework because I had to take my tuba to the vets."
(That one might win an award for unusual homework excuses!). This excuse was delivered completely straight-faced by one of the most honest, upright students I have ever had. And it was the truth! She proffered a note from the vet as proof:
"Chrystal was here last night with her tuba until 9 pm. We eventually were able to extract her ferret from the instrument."

In first grade I get "my little brother/sister tore it up". I don't assign much homework and expect reading instead now.

One of my students said a little kid on the bus stole it. Why would a little student" steal" a fourth grader's homework?

"My mom said home work is for p***ies."

"Homework is a tool of oppression by the white man."

"We used it to start the wood stove fire."

"Dad threw up on it when he overdosed last night and it was too gross to pick up."

"On Face Book I read that home work is not a valid use of time for children." written in a note sent back with the home work. The homework was not done and had big red x's across it.

The home work is reading 20 minutes a night, practice of spelling list words, basic math practice, and for those who need it sight word/high frequency word practice.

Had a mom mad that I sent the same math page two days in a row.

I told her, her daughter flunked the facts quiz and needed the practice. She said, "Oh, that makes sense!"
