Rewards for table points

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I started using table points for my groups because the kids were taking foreverrrr to put things away, take materials out, following directions, etc. I started table points and OMG! they are capable of moving quickly !!!

My classroom is right next to the playground so I have been using an extra 5-10 minutes extra of play time as a reward for those earning table points. My issue though is I'm getting tears, whining, complaints from groups that are not earning this and I'm not sure it's the best reward now. It's VERY motivating but causes issues at the end of the day.

For those of you that issue table points, what kind of rewards do you offer? Thanks!

In 6th, I did:

Bring a drink during class (not water)
Wear a hat in class
Bring a pillow/stuffed animal (this was the most popular, which I never really understood why!?!)
Ice cream sandwich--you can buy these really cheap, and I would just give them on the way to lunch)

My kids came up with the idea of a table trophy. It sits in the middle of the winning table!

I keep a tray of glitter grapes in the freezer. Table winners get a glitter grape.

Wash grapes and leave them wet. Sprinkle with Jello powder and freeze. They love it! I won't use candy as a reward.

Table Point Winner Options
Old 10-11-2016, 04:35 PM

Clip to ScrapBook #12

I give my students a few options:
1. special stickers
2. lunch with me
3. free homework pass (one assignment)
4. Starbursts or Twizzler

Most of the time students choose to have lunch with me. I think it's funny because I worry that I am being too hard on them but apparently not.

I also make sure that each table wins. So, I may say that table 4 earned the point even if they weren't the first table to be ready. I also count down using fractions until I get to 0 to make sure that a particular table earns a point.

I like the table trophy idea.
