I was just wondering what sort of things everyone uses in their morning meetings. I'm mostly wondering how to make the routines such as calender, days we've been in school, etc. more engaging.
What sort of routines do you use in Morning Meeting?

A big change that I implemented this year that has made a huge impact is giving the students individual white boards to write their own answers for our calendar routine as we go. It gives a chance for every child to answer every part of the calendar -- so much math practice in about 7 min. a day!

We do:
Days we've been in school
Different ways to show the number with coins
Standard Form, Written form, Expanded form
Tallies
Ten more, ten less, one more , one less
Date
Weather graph

What a fantastic idea to keep every kid engaged!! My group really all love to have their voices heard!
Do you have any problems with kids who just doodle instead? Have you developed a method for preventing that?

My students also have mini-white boards in their desk that they answer calendar questions on. If they play and doodle on their board they get one warning. If they continue, I take the board and give them a piece of paper and pencil. This stops that, hey want the mini-white boards (5 X 5" shower boards) to write on.
