Lines of Kids

Any help for a teacher that has lines of kids following her either during transition times and sometimes in the middle of a lesson. I ask them to please sit down and they don't. They do know, however, that I never forget to get back to them. This group seems to need a lot of extra TLC. Help!

I feel sooo mean telling them to go sit down all the time, but OMG they are following me E V E R Y W H E R E! HELP!!!

Redirect them to where they are suppose to go and say "I will be right over to check in with you"...the kicker is that you have to remember to check in.

I just remind them that when I'm in the air they are in their chair. That usually gets them to remember to not follow me around and go back and raise their hand.

I don't handle this well and can *sometimes* be a little sarcastic about it. I've been known to say things like, "I don't want kids following me around like I'm some sort of Pied Piper!".

For mine, it just takes some re-direction. Once they start hearing me say things like, "Thanks, Johnny, for raising your hand and waiting for me to come to you. I appreciate how you didn't get up and follow me around the room" my conga line of students returns to their seats and raises their hands, hoping I might thank them in front of the whole class too.

Thanks for your advice, everyone. I've been having my "special helper"(the star of the week) say when prompted what I always say- PLEASE SIT DOWN- in a kind but firm voice. It's working so far, and the special helper loves it.

I have this problem when I am at my desk doing something like marking or FINALLY sitting down after 2 recesses of supervision and they are supposed to be working. I don't say anything to them but put a finger to my mouth and raise my other hand in the air, showing them that they too should be putting up their hand. Sometimes I also have to indicate with my hand that they should be sitting. I don't get up to help them until they are in their seat with the hand up. If someone raises their hand appropriately before they do, I help that person first because they are obviously not ready. I have to be very stringent about this otherwise they immediately start to take advantage.
