How do you organize your library? I've only taught third and second and am now going to Kindergarten (was supposed to be fifth, but that all changed). My books are sorted very much like Beth Newingham's where I use colored stickers and then labels. I use a red sticker to identify picture books, yellow for chapter, blue for series, green for non fiction and then I have subcategories. For example I have a box of realistic fiction, humor, fantasy, etc. for the picture books and the chapter books. I know I won't need my chapter books and will pack the majority away. But, how about the picture books. What categories should I use instead of realistic fiction, humor, fantasy, science fiction, etc. Part of me is leery about reorganizing and relabeling because I've been moved grade levels 3 times in 4 years and it's so time consuming, but I'm afraid those categories aren't appropriate for kindergarten.

Here are some of the categories I use: food, animal fiction, people fiction, alphabet, holidays, dr. Seuss, math, non fiction, non fiction animals, seasons, fairy tales, poetry, apples and pumpkins, school and home, dinosaurs and bugs, counting, and plants I have a lot of those easy reader leveled books (1-4) and I have them in their own tubs. If you have a lot of arthur books or a certain character I would give them their own tub. Hope that helps a little!

I have some by author, some by topic and a lot of leveled bins. I used the level ones so that my firsties can choose appropriate books to take home and add to their personal library above and beyond what I give them.

I shared what I do with my library in this post. You'll need to scroll down through it. I think it was my second response.

I hope it helps you.
