Any of you use the Smithsonian's Tween Tribune? With the increased need for non-fiction reading and research writing, this seems like it will be a great resource. Just wondering how others have incorporated it into their curriculum.

I spent the last 5 years focused on math/science, but I used it for a couple of years. I had students post comments to articles, or pick ones to present to the class. I don't remember how but I was able to monitor comments. I graded their responses. They had to find a point in the article and agree/disagree and give a valid argument why. I wish I could remember more, but it has been a long time. My students loved it though.

Thank you, I can get to the computer lab once a week, but I teach at a poorer school and don't know if I can ask everyone to log in from home. I would like to try it out though. If nothing else they are good articles to print and use in class.

I always used it at school too. And like you say, the articles are good and the kids will likely be engaged.

I use them for homework every other week. They have to read, annotate, and answer a few questions. Give on Monday and due on Friday.

Argumentative Writing

I find that these articles provide a fantastic opportunity for argumentative writing, and citing text evidence.

I use this format with students. You'll need to write a response together so that they get the full gist, but after that it's pretty simple. Students soon discover that some articles are fluff and fun to read, while others provide a real chance for argument.

Feel free to adapt the assignment page for your own uses.

Good luck!
