Not sure its appropriate to post in here yet, but Texas Gov. Abbott announced today that our schools will remain closed for the remainder of the current school year, so that means I am unofficially retired. My official date is May 31st. Looking forward to becoming a legit member of this group soon!

WOOHOO! Thanks everyone for the warm welcome! I'm very happy to be a part of the RETIRED group!

NJ Teacher, you are correct - didn't expect my final year to end at spring break and with a pandemic.

Well, congratulations on your retirement, although Iím sure it seems a little strange not to be able to see your students one last time.

I did not expect March 6 to be my last day of traditional teaching either. My school building is closed, but we are still providing instruction and office hours until the end of the year. I have had some sad moments at home thinking about not celebrating the "lasts". Very few of my students know I am retiring.

Amazingly my blood pressure is lower. Considering the circumstances, I don't feel happy yet about retirement. I wish things were normal.

Enjoy your freedom when & if the Covid-19 is finally over. Right now it's not exactly like a real retirement since many people are still not working and it's dangerous to mix with those who are. My happiest days are when I can drive by a school where the kids are playing outside & parking lots are full of vehicles, but I just drive past and go into a store where there are only a few people shopping, but it's fully stocked, of course.

Welcome md2dkh3! (That's a mouthful!) We're delighted to have you here no matter how it's happened. A bit of an anticlimax after a career that deserves to be celebrated and feted, I'm sure, but I assume you still have video (Zoom or other) instruction you're doing in Texas? That means planning and prep (hardly retirement) although you don't have to go and expose yourself to little germy bodies. A friend of mine here is in the same situation and didn't know when she sent her kiddos home for spring break that she wouldn't get to say goodbye properly, nor will there be retirement parties or parents or any of that. Bittersweet.

Once you wrap your head around it, you will discover joys untold and unanticipated in being retired. We will probably throw some sort of retirement bash for you and others at the end of next month or in June. It's our annual retirement par-tay!

I retired last June. I don't regret it. Now during the time of Coronavirus, teaching will be even more complicated.

The celebration is fun at school with your friends. I am sorry you are not going to have the same experience.

Also, the celebration can be awkward. I was uncomfortable knowing my grade level buddies were giving me a party on Saturday night when they had husbands and kids at home.

But more than anything I realized how it was time, relieved that I didn't have to "learn" new formats, computer "stuff", and answer the question, "When are you going to retire?"

Almost every day, I have a few minutes of gratefulness. Glad I hung in there and did the job, joy from memories of students that were good, and relief from the end of all the grading, planning, and endless meetings.

Best wishes to you.

OH Fun! Didn't know there was a party to look forward to here! Cool.

I've been an interventionist for about 6 years so my remote learning prep is probably less than that of a classroom teacher.

It does seem a little strange to not have an ending to the year - not say goodbye to students and staff/friends. But missing my retirement lunch is such a small thing compared to what many are having to give up. No big deal at all.

Thanks again to all of you for the very warm welcome. I'm quite excited about retiring and becoming a member of this board.

I've been subbing for years but not sure if/when schools will even open their doors again.

I admire you retirees so much. You folks have many "battle wound" stories from your career.

Thank you to all retired teachers
