Tried to save a butterfly

He hatched from his chrysalis. He fought for most of today. I finally helped him out of his molt/chrysalis, but his wings were too deformed to fly. We tried. I spoon fed him apple and strawberry and melon. He just couldn’t make it. His proboscis was also deformed.

I had to put him in our garden.

May he Rest In Peace.

That happened once in my classroom butterfly project. We were all so sad.

I struggle with all of the death involved in raising butterflies.

When I raised them there were lots of extras. If one didn’t make it I put it outside when the kids weren’t in the room. I didn’t want them to be sad!

My coworker, on the other hand, walked out with her class in a funeral like procession with the dead butterflies to return them to nature as “bird food.”

I would have done the same thing! Although I understand that death is part of life, I would have tried to help.
