Any resource teachers here?

Clip to ScrapBook #1

This is my first year as a resource teacher. I previously was an ES teacher for the last 2 years. My district is doing distance learning for at least the first marking period. I just gained access to my school's shared Google Drive. While browsing I came across last year's teacher schedules. The teacher I'm replacing doesn't look like they had a room. I'm hoping I have a desk and filing cabinet somewhere to do paperwork/take prep and lock up IEPs. Not sure if I should ask my new P about workspace or not. If we can work from home it won't be an issue, but if we're expected to report to work physically I'd want to know.

Any resource teachers that don't have their own classroom and float? Do you have a small space somewhere to do work?

Are you guessing this because the teacher did all push in? IME in those situations, it's common to have some sort of shared office space. Likely not a good space to pull kids to, but some sort of desk/cabinet set up like you described, often with multiple people in similar positions sharing the room.

A few years ago, my district built all new schools. The district/architects didn't want to build rooms for sped teachers because they wanted to force a push-in model (historically, district has wanted push-in and in practicality most schools do more pull out). I was told I would be given a little filing cabinet thing on wheels- about the size of two filing cabinet drawers. I could wheel this up to an open desk to do my planning/IEP writing etc. There were "flex spaces" that I could sign out if I needed to pull a group. I was livid. I'm usually very reserved at work and I threw several fits about this.

My P ended up assigning the "flex spaces" as permanent rooms to specialists, even though she wasn't supposed to. I got the nicest one, probably because I complained the loudest . If I were to ever change districts I will ask in the interview what kind of room/work space I'd have.

Have you been introduced/given contact information for any teammates? Are you the only resource teacher? I'd ask teammates for the scoop rather than the P. If you haven't been given any contact info for teammates, ask the P for that.

I'm guessing partially on this and on a room assignment document from last year. The teacher I'm taking over for isn't listed on the room assignment document or on a phone list document either. My mentor is listed as having their own room, so maybe it is a shared space? It's just odd that their isn't any trace of the teacher I replaced on the room list or phone list.

The schedule (and it looks like they haven't deviated in a few years) looks like me supporting in a HR, co-teaching for two periods, pulling a group to the computer lab for intervention, co-teacher another two periods, lunch, prep, and co-teaching one more period. My mentor is on my team with a similar schedule, but they take their group to the library for intervention. I just have my mentor's name right now. Maybe I will ask P for their contact.

Glad you got your space! I'm okay with no room as long as I have some sort of office even if it's shared!
