The custodian is not happy with me

I was given 31 desks. If I go by strict social distancing measures, I can fit 10-12 kids. I was told by my coordinator that we are up to 18 in person in 4th grade and to take my desks down to 20 amd stack my extras in the hall.

I did what I was told and now my custodian is not happy.

She told me to stack them in the corner because I had to have all of them - and not quite that nicely. But, hey, we are all stressed, a little cussing is understandable.

Shes currently headed to the office to complain and im staying a mile away from that conflict.

It could be worse. All in the same year, I:
1) did a sugar crystal experiment the day of open house. 5 of them broke when the custodian was trying to get the building ready for open house. He told me it looked like an elephant jacked off in my room.

2) did an experiment with baking soda, vinegar and food coloring. You can guess what my floor looked like.

3) glitter. After that I bought him liquor. Lots and lots of liquor.

Fortunately he was cute and single and we got along well. And I bought him food and liquor often.

Bring her a chocolate bar tomorrow and thank her for her hard work. You really want her on your side.

I was seriously contemplating what I could do for her. A Dr Pepper and chocolate may be a good peace offering.

Oh no, Zephie! You and the custodians seemed to have gotten off to a great start, and now this had to happen. Hope things cool down a little bit. You are right. Everyone is a little stressed right now.

How is everything else going? Are you clear on what to do when school starts as far as teaching in person and online? Are you and your grade level team coming up with ideas for the year? I canít imagine the stress right now. This is such a new experience for everyone! Hang in there! You are all in this together and will get through this together!

I'm gonna PM you. Ive got some info to share, but in a public forum it could be too identifying.

Don't know why I'm so interested in your year.
Guess I've read so much about your struggle and good heart.
Please post updates.
Doughnuts would help your janitor's overworked self too.

Although my principal at my last school once told me that I should watch "Shameless" and it was his favorite show! Of course, I had already seen the first few episodes when he said that and I was SHOCKED he'd mention it! But it made me laugh!

my coordinator sorted things for the most part. He and I moved all the extra desks to a small storage room thats not really in use so anyone in the wing who needs them, can use them.

I also met my P in person today and we talked for a few minutes before she had to leave to go to the doctor. Woo! She's a major fireball. I threw a couple ideas/questions to her and she answered them honestly. She also said she's tired of being on zoom meetings all day because she wants to be checking in on her teachers.

I once made the custodian very unhappy. I had moved to a new school. Well new to me. The front part of the school had been built in 1864. The back was added in the 1880s. Large rooms. Huge windows. Coat closets. Nothing built in.

I had two very nice, very heavy bookshelves. The previous teacher had placed them in such a way that part of the room was hidden unless you walked to a certain spot. Not my kind of set up. So I spent a day emptying, moving, and refilling the bookshelves.

When I returned the custodian was furious with me. The super we had then did a walk through with the custodians before school started. He came after I moved the bookshelves and was upset with the floor. My moving the shelves made it obvious that the bookcases hadnít been moved in years and the custodian had been waxing around them. The large rectangular wax build areas were unsightly. The custodian had to redo those areas of the room.

And yet, while off to a bad start the custodian and I became friendly and ended up with a very good working relationship. I hope your relationship with your custodian does too.
