Does anyone have good ideas for teaching skip counting? My students come to second grade with a pretty good knowledge for 5's, 10's, and 2's but really struggle with 3's and 4's.

I bought kevin Schaffer's skip counting songs - they have catchy tune and they're funny.

Well, I guess it isn't a song, but it's an activity. This is called "Sparkle." Have the students stand in one large circle/oval around the class. You will go around the circle counting by 3's. The first student will say 3, the next will say 6, etc. You tell them that the Sparkle number is 24. So when a student says 24, everyone says "Sparkle" and the person that said 24 sits down. Counting then begins again at 3, then 6, etc and the class says "Sparkle when the next person says 24. It goes on till there is one student standing. They kids LOVE it.

I've done it with Kindergartener's and counting by 1's or the ABC's.

Last year we made a sort of counting tape with pictures we drew. Each student got a 3"x3" piece of white construction paper on which they drew a picture for our Skip Counting Number Line. For 3's, we drew insects because we had been studying them and insects have 3 body parts. Then I taped the pictures onto long strips of construction paper and we wrote the skip coutning numbers under the pictures: 3, 6, 9, etc. Someone else on my team drew snowmen. We had strips for 2's, 3's, 5's, and 10's. The kids really enjoyed making them.

that I love. I was cleaning out my room and found 2 laminated multiplication charts. I cut each strip for each number. I had a long laminated strip of the 2's, 3's, 4's, etc. you get the idea. I put a strip on the board using magnets to hold it. I chose a number to focus on for the week, played that song, and had a student use a pointer to point to the numbers in the 3's as the singer sang the 3's song. Everyone else sings along of course. It has proven so effective! Also, when we are working out problem solving problems, I will break out into song and begin singing the song for that number on the cd to find the answer. The kids just automatically begin singing with me. I find them doing this on their own too to solve problems! Works like a charm!

I use to have my children memorize the numbers 3 6 9 2 5 8 1 4 7 0. I would write these numbers on the board and we would count to l00 by 3s. When counting to 100 or beyond, the numbers always ends with these numbers.

The students sit in a circle. You say a word for the students to spell. The students will spell the word around the circle one letter at a time. Once the last letter has been said, the next student says "sparkle". The student that says "sparkle" is out. If a student misspells the word or omits a letter they are also out.

eg. The word is "plate"

student 1: p

student 2: l

student 3: a

student 4: i (out)

student 5: t

student 6: e

student 7: sparkle (out)

Play continues until there is only one student left.
