Hello,

I am a first year teacher and teach a grade 6 art class. Art is definitely not one of my strengths. Does anyone have any ideas or lesson plans?? HELP!
Thanks so much!

My recommendation is to take an artist or group of artist's work whom you admire look at it and try to digest why you like it and then incorporate that into a lesson plan. Example take Matisse's later collage work and use as an introductory example of collage tearing, layering and overlap. Then choose a subject matter related to what the children are already learning about in class. Say they're learning about dinosaurs have them collage a scene of their favorite dinosaur in it's habitat with special attention to details like scales, eyes, color patterns, teeth making different shapes and arrangements with colored paper and textures etc. Also make them aware of scale change so the things closer to the edge maybe bigger and the further away things may be smaller etc. Also details specific to the dinosaur's habitat eating habits and the actions taking place in the scene.

Variation you could also do a diaorama

As an art teacher, there are a couple of books I love for ideas.
Let's Meet Famous Artists by Harriet Kinghorn, Jacqueline Badman, Lisa Lewis-Spicer
Using Art to Create Art by Wendy M.L. Libby

Hope these help.

Art is definitely not a strength for me, which is why I love http://deepspacesparkle.blogspot.com She has art lessons broken down by category, age, and inspiration. I've used lessons from 1st - 6th for my sixth graders, and they're always good.

called "Dynamic Art Projects for Children" by Denise M. Logan. It is full of great stuff including step by step pictures. And another great thing about it is that the lessons don't require off the wall supplies. They are typical art supplies that you would have on hand. ENJOY!
