Clip to ScrapBook #1

I am moving this school year from 5th to 3rd Grade. I will only be teaching Reading/ELA. I was wondering about having centers for my kids, should I have some? What kinds and how many?

I think centers are wonderful for third graders. Please be sure to PREPARE the centers ahead of time and make sure the students will be able to work idependently through them. I would not put out more than five centers. Maybe start with three until the class got use to the process.

I did not use centers for reading. Instead, I used the Daily 5. It works very well with reader's workshop and/or guided reading. Daily 5 has students working on reading, reading, reading rather than center work. It is easy to plan for, and incorporates word work too.

What will you be using for Language Arts? Do you have a grammar/writing book? Will you be using writer's workshop?

If you are using writer's workshop, you will not need centers because students will be writing, writing, writing. You can incorporate grammar, capitalization/punctuation, and editing/revising into your mini-lessons if you are using it.

What exactly is the Daily 5 and how does it work? Do you use just this for your centers?

My students do centers in my room while I'm teaching guided reading. My centers (or stations) are: independent reading, comprehension skills (they do activities with the skill they learned the week before), cursive handwriting, spelling, and fluency. It's a lot of work to put them together but after the 1st year it gets easier.

Daily 5 is not centers. You will need to read the book...should take you about three hours. It is a very easy read, and has so many step-by-step directions for beginning of the year implementation. It can be ordered from Amazon, or if you have a chain bookstore nearby, you can view it there and decide if this is for you.

I would also suggest you go to the Daily 5 website. There are videos and other info at the 2Sisters (authors/their nickname) website.

The Peony Room at this site has info about the Daily 5. Here is the link.

There is also a group for Daily 5 at this site. Here is the link.
