Students Not on Task During Daily 5

I have a couple of students who are never on task during Daily 5. They cannot handle doing the independent work that other students are doing. Does anyone have any advice on what to do with those students during a 90 minute reading block?

You can try using a 3 minute sand timer (we had one in our Boggle game). Sit next to the student and explain that you noticed they are having a difficult time reading (or writing) the whole time. Tell them to see if they can read the whole time the sand timer is running. Take a quick break at the end and ask them how they thought they did. Turn the timer over and repeat...our 4th grade student we used this with seemed slightly embarrassed to be singled out to sit next to a teacher and quickly built his stamina!

You could also practice with them at recess time. Go over the I charts, and have them build stamina.

Doing this during recess fast forwards the process in my experience.

I tell my kids that if they are off task during daily 5 time then they have to make that time up during free centers. I always get one or two kids but the more i have been doing that the less kids are doing it because they HATE not getting to do free center time.
