Clip to ScrapBook #1

Last year I taught third grade, this year I'm moving to fourth. Not a big change but I'm a little anxious. I loved teaching my students through songs, raps, and dances. My third graders loved it!
Not sure if I want to do alot of singing and dances this year, I don't want to seem too "kiddy" with the fourth graders. Any thoughts? Have you done teaching through singing/arts in fourth grade?

I used songs for multiplication tables! They were such a hit! Your fourth graders will enjoy it. My kids also loved Readers' Theater. We would have different groups put on the plays and they would go to town with props and scenery also. I would then have them perform for other classes.I also managed to do some crafts with them. We made class bracelets at the beginning of the year. You will love fourth grade. It was my favorite and I taught all from K to 8.

Everytime I hear Richie Valens "La Bamba", I think of the time a short story mentioned that song and I played it each time it was mentioned via computer speakers.

I am retired now thinking of fond memories.

Fourth graders still love to sing and dance!! This will be my fourth year teaching fourth grade and I have learned that although fourth graders are a little older, they really are still kids and love things that might seem "kiddie". Students retain more information when it's something they enjoy

You have the added advantage of knowing the kids. You can jump right in--they know your expectations and procedures.

My students loved songs, poems, read alouds--most attentive class ever last year--reader's theater, scoot, centers, etc.

Enjoy!

I'm not making a huge jump. I have a friend who teaches fifth, and she doesn't dare to sing or do chants/rhymes. Which made me curious about 4th. Thank you for your kind replies.

Sad that your friend won't use songs or chants to teach students certain skills. When my daughter was in 5th grade she had a teacher that taught her the presidents and parts of speech by songs/chants. My daughter is 20 years old and still loves to sing the song with all the presidents names. She has decided to become a teacher also and I have a feeling that will be one of the first songs she teaches to her own class. Never to young to sing/chant if it means they are learning!!!
