Puppy and Rabies

Warning -- this is long and very sad.

Back in early April, DH and I adopted a black lab mix puppy for our kids (DD is 11 and DS is 8). She was a wonderful puppy. We named her Bonnie. On Thursday, she was on the back porch and a raccoon came out of nowhere and attacked her.

DH killed the raccoon and I grabbed the puppy. We immediately went to the vet, and the puppy only had scratches, so we thought everything would be ok. Unfortunately, because of her age, she had not yet had her rabies vaccine. In my state, it is given in the third series of puppy shots and she had just had her first two. The appointment for the third (which would have included rabies) was scheduled for next week.

The raccoon was tested for rabies and it came back positive. The state gave us two choices -- euthanize immediately or put the puppy in a contactless kennel for a minimum of 6 months. She couldn't even be petted for 6 months. Both the health department and my vet argued with the state office, but they would not budge. Unfortunately, DH and I just could not allow our sweet Bonnie to live in a tiny jail for 6 months, and we chose to euthanize her. Please, please don't flame me for this decision. We just had no options. The vet agreed that it was probably the safest choice.

Unfortunately, when I grabbed the puppy, I got blood on my hands. So, yesterday, I also had to start the rabies shots for humans. I had to get 4 shots yesterday and go back Monday for more. I will then have to report on the following Friday, and the Friday after that, for the rest of the human rabies series.

My children and DH are absolutely devastated over losing their puppy. I feel horrible because the shots are miserable and cause flu-like aches.

Thank you for reading. It helped to tell the whole story. My kids, DH, and I would appreciate your thoughts and prayers.

I am so sorry. That has to be devastating for all of you. Please be kind to yourself!

We have had one friend who needed the Rabies series and said it was miserable. I really hope you are feeling better soon.

I am so sorry you and your family are going through this. You will all be in my thoughts and prayers. Though the decision for Bonnie was extremely difficult, you did the right thing.

What a nightmare....I'm so sorry you've had to go through all of this. Just so you know, as I was reading your story, and got to the part of being given the choice to isolate or euthanize her, in my mind I decided that I would most likely euthanize, before I read what you decided to do. No flames from me.

I hope that all of you heal from this ordeal.

Aw...you made a choice that was very difficult. So sorry. My daughter’s dog is riddled with cancer and she needs to put her down but has not made the decision yet. At least you made a decision.

Your experience is so heartbreaking. I believe you made the right decision. To not have any physical contact for six months would be cruel and inhumane in my opinion. That would have been traumatic for your poor little Bonnie. What a devastating turn of events.

I am sending positive thought and prayers your way. I hope you and your family feel better physically and emotionally soon.

What a sad and devastating experience for your family. Of course you made the most humane choice but it still hurts.

FYI, a few years ago there was a raccoon on my deck that was acting like it was drunk. I know that aggression is a sign of rabies but I didn't know an unsteady gait is also. I did notify my neighbors to be on the lookout, fortunately nothing ever came of it.

I'm sad for your children and family on the loss of their puppy.
I'm so sorry that you have to go through the pain and discomfort of the rabies series.
You did the right thing in putting the puppy down. It would be so wrong for a young puppy not to have human interaction or a lab not to have exercise. His development would have been so damaged.

What a terrible decision to have to make. I'm so sorry for the loss of your little dog. I hope your series of shots go quickly and the side effects minimal.

Devastated for you that this happened. I am also sorry that you need to get the series of shots, as well. There was no easy answer in this dilemma, and you had your vet's support. I am heartbroken for you.

I hope after your family emotionally heals, you can take on another puppy to help completely heal you. Positive thoughts and prayers for you all.

I think this is the saddest non-corvid story I have heard in quite a while. What a story of horror for all of you!

I hope that the shots get easier for you and that this is a memory sooner than later.

I am so sorry for your famiily and Bonnie. You did the loving thing for Bonnie.
You are all in my prayers.

It's my first day in heaven,
And what a beautiful place,
You'll be glad to know,
There's a smile upon my face,
The moment I left you,
Two angels in white,
Carried me up here,
To heaven that night.
All those stories you hear ,
About rainbow bridge are true,
But you don't walk over it,
The angels carried me through,
There's a gate at the end,
Made of real pearl,
It must be the biggest gate,
In the whole wide world!
Once I got in
I started looking around,
You just won't believe,
All the neat things I found!
The first place they took me,
Had to be the most fun,
A humongous field,
With miles and miles to run!
Once I was tired the angels said,
We'll take you to your new home,
But first we need to stop by this place
Full of tasty bones,
They told me to take one with me,
But one is all I need,
Because every good thing lasts forever,
Up in heaven you see,
They took me to my new house,
It took my breath away,
Most beautiful place I've ever seen,
With a huge yard to play,
They said come on lets go inside ,
And have a look around,
They took me to the bottom floor,
You won't believe what I found,
The floor of my house is a window
And you won't believe the view,
See my house it sets right over yours,
So I can still keep an eye on you!
I was so worried about you,
When I went away,
Now I can watch you every second,
And know that you are okay!
So the next time you are missing me,
This is what you do,
Step outside and look straight up,
Because I still have my eye on YOU!

I am late seeing this, but just wanted to tell you, Jen, how very sad I am for you and your family. Your poor kids! Poor you and DH for having to make this choice (I would have done as you did), and especially for you for having to go through the shots and the feeling ill. It is all very traumatic.

Hugs to you all. I'm sorry for your baby Bonnie.
