I am looking for any art lesson ideas for O"Keefe and Kandinsky that would be appropriate for third grade students. Thank you for your ideas.

I would start by showing several copies of the artist's work, either with prints or a power point. Discuss. Ask the students what they think, like and dislike. Discuss color, shapes, balance, symmetry......

Then I would show photos of the artist and give a brief biography. Talk about why they became an artist and how-training and education.

Then I would have them do some art work to imitate the artist's style.

Then have a gallery walk so everyone can walk around the room and see what the artist inspired in each of their classmates.

I have gotten fantastic paintings from first and second graders by studying O'Keefe calendar prints (they're half price now) and bringing in fresh flowers - tiger lilies, pansies, poppies. The only requirement I made was that they fill the paper (22 X 24).

There is a great site called Artsonia (dot) com. You have to register as a teacher, but then you have access to tons of lesson plans and student projects. I did a search of Georgia O'keefe and got 9 lessons and projects there. It is free to join.
