Anyone use a book in 4th grade wtih an unexpected ending?

I think this book has an unexpected ending. I didn't expect the dog to die the first time I read it. I have used this as a read aloud with third graders and a lit set with fourth. Hope this helps.

As a read aloud-the unexpected part is that it's the grandma learning to read not the child as you infer at first

First Day Jitters has a cute surprise ending but most kids have probably heard it by fourth grade.

The Green Book has an unexpected ending. At the end you find out that the book is actually the journal of the main character. It's a science fiction book that is pretty short and good for fourth or fifth grade.

Love That Dog is a great book, a journal between a student and teacher and his initial dislike
of poetry, its a great way to introduce poetry to both boys and girls...you also learn "surprise" that the author is actually writing about his dog that was killed. It is a very powerful yet simply written book. I had grade 3's read it in partnership last year to certain points and then had them do a response either giving their viewpoint, predictions, surprises etc. I highly recommend the book.

Also by Van Allsburg, The Widow's Broom has an unexpected ending (and is a great october/halloween type read aloud).

This is a simple book about an imaginary friend. I use it to teach inferring in first grade.
