Literacy Texts

Our district is adopting a new literacy curriculum. Do you have any advice on resources for reading or writing anchor texts for 5th grade? We do not want a basal and will begin implementing common core next year. It would be smart to use the money for some type of computer to read and type on, but I doubt we can afford it. I'm really at a loss here.

Any advice or personal experience in this matter is greatly appreciated.

Are your coteachers comfortable using novels and supplemental materials to cover your state's objectives? I started doing this about 10 years ago and have tweaked my units until i have them like I want them. I started out using commercial books like Literature Units and Portals to Reading (ck out mariinc.com).

The kids like them a lot better than basals and they still get the content IF you take the time to do it right.

Get novels! And nonfiction!!! 5th graders really need nonfiction and it often gets left out. Use the reading workshop model and you'll see your kids grow. They'll be motivated to read and enjoy it.
