Does anyone have a creative way of displaying each student in the class and their writing status during writer's workshop using the Writing process? I am hoping to find a creative way for the students to see where they are and to be able to easily move to the next step.

I made a long poster of the writing process. Topic, rough draft, edit/revise.... Then I put each students name on a clothespin. They can move their clothespin to the process they are on. They love it. I also have a spot for sharing. Then I know what students are ready to share at the end of the day.

I don't have a picture to show but I have an extra chalkboard space in my room but you could always use a bulletin board. I made small description cards of each step (brainstorming, drafting, revising, editing, peer editing/revising, publishing) and laminated them on colored construction paper (yellow for brainstorming because it made me think of a lightbulb, green for drafting because they're ready to "go and write", red for revising - our entire district uses red pen for revising their work, blue for edit - our entire district uses blue pen for editing, and publishing is purple - just because!) I then used stikki clips and put a bunch under each description card and made copies of small clip art pencils on yellow cardstock and wrote each of their names on one. They use those to move across the board so I know where they are in the process. We are on vacation this week but when I go back, I would be more than happy to take a photo to send to you.

I think it makes a lot of sense to have it coordinated with their writing notebooks. I borrowed the notebook setup plan from mrsdryzal d o t c o m (writing workshop section). We have a blue folder for prewriting, green for revise, red for edit & yellow for publish. They use blue, green or red pens when working in those sections. I divided a circle into fourths and color coded it to match the sections. They move a clothespin with their name to show where they are in the process.
