Difficult position

Clip to ScrapBook #1

Currently the climate in our building is in a funk, for a lack of better words. Those who have been on here the longest know that we had a very difficult situation occur in our school buiding about a month ago. We, the administration and I, are still dealing with after effects and will continue the next couple of weeks. I am in a unique situation because I am both a school employee, therefore I can't voice my concerns or opinions to many people because of laws since it turned into a personnel issue. However, I am also a parent to a student in the class that was most effected. I am torn on what to do? I want to back our district and administration because I do believe they truly want to do best for all our students, but as a parent I have some real concerns directly tied to my own DS. Has anyone ever been in a situaiton where you are torn between your school role and your parent role? I really could use some outside opinions on this one.

I have never been in that type of situation before, but it must be really weighing on you. I just want to say I'm sorry and that I hope it resolves itself soon!

YES, I have been in that position and it's so difficult!! I find that I need to be clear about my role when I talk to others (whether I'm speaking from the professional or parent role). Your child's health and safety comes first, and I would address those with administration/teachers and make it clear that you are discussing it as a parent. Of course you're privy to way more information than you would be as a parent, and that feels weird. As the professional, I don't always agree with what administration has done/said. In those cases, I say what I can honestly say I agree with to parents, and keep it minimal so I don't have to say things I don't agree with and I can appear to be supporting my school/administration without saying anything I don't agree with. Does that make sense? I'm tired and not explaining very well. It's a rotten position to be in
