Ideas for Young Authors Project

Clip to ScrapBook #1

Dear Teachers,

I'm looking for some ideas for our 3rd Grade Young Authors project. Last year I had my students write their autobiographies. I'd like to try something new this year.

One idea I've been playing with is to have my students imitate books that follow a certain pattern like The Salamander Room, Joseph Had a Little Overcoat, or The Very Hungry Caterpilla... Please let me know if you know other books that I might want to use for our writing project.

Thank you in advance for your help.

How about a circle story

like If You Give a Mouse A Cookie? The story must end where it started. It can be a challenge, but still fun. My students wrote one collectively one year around Thanksgiving. It was called If You Give a Pilgrim a Musket. It turned out really cute.

Picture book titled Fortunately

The book switches back and forth from what is unfortunate and what is fortunate. It would be easy to follow as a pattern to write a new book.

Also The Important Book would be a good picture book to model.

What about a math theme book? Each Orange Has Eight Slices would work well.

Dear Claire22,
With my 3rd graders I read Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus. Then after we finshed the class brainstormed ideas on what they wanted to do. Like Don't let the Pigeon go to the Mall with my Credit Card. They they wrote and drew books that follwed the same pattern as Mo Willam's writing. They came out really cute and I showed them to the parnets at Open House.
Hope This Helps!

I found this idea on some website....I put different animals and different modes of transportation in two hats. They chose one from each hat. Some of the combinations were hilarious, like a rhino driving a motorhome. They turned out really cute after illustrated them.
