Library Mouse (use for WW)

Does anyone use this book? I use it for my kick off to Writer's Workshop. It's about a mouse who lives in the library and writes books. All of the children LOVE his stories and they want to meet him. The mouse is too shy to show up so instead he leaves an empty tissue box with a sign that says "Meet the Author." When the children look inside there is a mirror.

So, after reading the book to the students I explain that I want them to meet an author. I either pass around a hand held mirror or put up a small display with the title "Meet the Author" that has a little mirror on it. Each week (later in the year) I try to "showcase" student work there. LOVE THIS BOOK!!!!!!

Thank you for sharing. I can't wait to check out the book and read it. We always read a story titled Christopher Mouse and they love it! So, I know they will enjoy another mouse story.

Love Library Mouse! I use it in the library for National Library Week, all the kids write "little mouse books" on a foldable and we display them in the regular collection. This is a great book for the classroom, 4th would like it.

I also use it as my first writer's workshop lesson. I'll have to do something with a mirror. Love that idea

I use Sarah's Story to intro Writing Workshop. It's about a girl who says she doesnt have a story but discovers she does. It's perfect!

Sarah's Story and Library Mouse sound great. I am going to pick them up at my local library later today. I also noticed that there are a few other Library Mouse books. I may have to take a look at those as well.

i've used Library mouse with kindergarten. The kids love it and it helps them to start making little books.

Bats in the library by Brian Lies is another lovely book about libraries and books.

Starting writers workshop

A fun book to start writers workshop is Patches Lost and Found. Its about a little girl who is given an assignment to write a story and the teacher says she must write the words first and do the pictures after. In the end, she has a great story about her pet that was lost and she had written the story by drawing the pictures first and then adding the words.

I agree with sinthea30 that Patches is a fun book to start WW with. It fits well with UoS because in primary writing drawing and labeling pictures comes first. It also shows students that you draw and write about what is important to you.

I use it also!!! And love it!!
I made a hole in the top of a shoe box and the box says meet the author...I put a mirror inside. After the book the students look in one at a time. I was surprised with their big smiles after looking in...and they don't even spoil it for the other kids! It was kind of a precious moment....so try to make one if you can. It's so easy!

I keep the box up all year in case they need to see it again.
