Our first unit in social studies is Good Citizens. I always enjoy this unit but would really like some good picture books for it. Does anyone know of any that teach what good citizens do or about specific good citizens?

I bought the book that goes with "The Kissing Hand." It's called "Chester and the Big Bad Bully." I also like to use Chrysanthemum and point out how the other kids make fun of Chrysanthemum. My kids always get very protective of her during the story!

The Brand New Kid by Katie Couric is awesome for being a good classroom citizen.

Have you Filled a Bucket Today is an awesome book that leads to many activities...it is one I read more than one time during the year...especially during the winter when cabin fever or winter blues set in

Good Citizens Unit Picture Books

I also teach Good Citizens in my first grade social studies unit! Some ideas are Duck for President or Arthur Meets the President. I also like My Teacher for President- its great for discussion. There are some great alphabet books you can use for your unit. I've seen ABC books on famous American symbols, famous women through history, and famous African Americans through history. (The kids love guessing what each letter will stand for.) Vote! by Eileen Christelow goes into great details about why and how voting works. Hope that helps!
