I am looking for a good read aloud. I would like it to be a chapter book that would be appropriate for 2nd grade. Also, I only have boys with very short attention spans.

When I taught second, I loved (and students loved) Charlotte's Web.

I used Charlotte's Web for the last two years. kids love it. Another favorite, especially with boys, is Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing by Judy Blume. You can read a chapter at a sitting. It's really about family life and the trials of having a younger sibling. One year I used it extensively as mentor text for poetry writing and character study.

Have you checked out author Jon Scieszka's website www.guysread.com ? He is passionate about the importance of getting boys reading, and he has listed many books of interest to boys. My second grade boys have enjoyed Scieszka's series The Time Warp Trio. Also look at www.boysread.org . It looks promising.

Oggie Cooder by Sarah Weeks is a great read aloud. It's about a boy, Oggie, who has the amazing talent of being able to charve cheese - a cross between chewing and carving. It's a very funny book and second grade boys seem to love it.

I always thought this series was too mature for 2nd graders to understand the humor. Glad to hear it isn't so.

by John Reynolds Gardiner. It is only about 100 pages, so it is not too long or too short. The main character is a male and the genre is science fiction. If you teach anything about plants in science that would be the perfect time to read it aloud. You cold then read a non fiction selection about photosynthesis and have the students make text to text connections if you like including non fiction during read aloud time.

Also Chocolate Touch by Patrick Skene Catling is a good read aloud fantasy novel for second graders. Then you could read them a book about the cocoa plant.

My students LOVED "My Father's Dragon" series (3 books) and so did I.
We also loved the "Clementine" series and "Gooney Bird Greene">
All of the above worked perfect for Grade 2/3 classes I have taught, and I highly recommend them!
