Hi I am a special education teacher for 5th grade. For our first grouping of standards I need to teach my class of 5th grades (all reading from 2-4th grade levels) how to write a memoir. Does anyone have any resources that can help me with this topic? Thanks!

I started teaching "small moments" writing by bringing in a "memory basket" filled with objects that would make me remember an important event in my life. Then I gave each student a "memory bag" so they could bring in their own objects. Each student shared before we started our rough drafts.

I got this idea from a writing book for primary grades (No More, I'm Done - I think), but I used it with my 4th graders very successfully.

BTW, small moments would be considered something that could happen in 15 minutes or less - real time. I wanted to eliminate the and then, and then, and then, and then stories that students tell about their vacations or a trips to amusement parks, etc.

This picture book by Mem Fox is great for introducing small moments! It focuses on the memories that objects bring back.

Donald Crews..Shortcut..takes a small piece of a day at Grandma's...

my fourth graders enjoy both books.
