HELP! Need your wisdom to get going in writing!

Clip to ScrapBook #1

New to third grade and must teach 6 traits, but district provides no curriculum or resources. I need a curriculum (that I can afford) for teaching writing to my kiddos. It must have lessons (and a lot of them) that I can simply follow (and learn from) until I "get it" as the teacher and can then begin fly on my own. Can any of you help me? I don't want my students to hate writing and/or be ineffective writers because I lack knowledge and direction. My time to research and read on this topic is really limited due to time demands created by grade level change, new Math series this year, full inclusion now in our rooms this year and RTI flex grouping new this year! It is intense to say the least. Help with writing please!!

You can use the traits in the context of any writing lesson. I recommend Culham's book, as she has lots of activities, but the Norwest Regional Eduactional Laboratory has great resources for free. Lucy Calkins has Units of Study for Teaching Writing grades 3-5 which includes separate books for each genre. It's a great resource.

Thank you. I've heard of Culham and Calkins before. I know that Calkins' units are pricey. Does her unit contain lessons that I can just pull out and go with? I would really like to just follow a framework right now. Too many other plates are spinning for me to take on another learning curve.

the Scholastic Trait Crates are GREAT. I use the 4th grade one..fabulous. I also agree with writing fix dot com. I use that one too!
