How can these two methods be combined? I need some backup info for my principal who only wants Units of Study. He almost came out of his chair when I mentioned 6 traits! What can I tell him so he won't be on my back?

The building blocks of writing ( ideas, word choice...) apply to any writing program or approach whether it is Writing Workshop/Units of Study, Seven Steps to Writing, Step up to Writing, Daily 5 or any other.

I have seen it put this way on this board: Writing Worshop follows a process from mini lesson through to publishing and 6+1 traits are what you do within each step of the process. So, if you do writers workshop, you can use the traits in prewrite (ideas, organization), draft (all the others), revise (improve fluency, word choice, voice), editing (conventions), and publish (presentation). They go hand in hand!

Also I believe that most USA state writing tests use rubrics based on the
six traits.

You may be interested in the lesson plans from Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District: (K-1) Mini Lessons for Writing Worshop using the 6 Traits. I thought this approach looked great!

I read that another poster already had units planned. Perhaps you could PM the poster.

Some of the books recommended here for teaching the 6 Traits can be used with the Units of Study too:
