I teach 4th grade and I am new to reader's workshop. I have read The Daily 5 book and like the ideas, but just not sure how to start and where to start.

Does anyone have lesson plans lined out for a year so I can see what I need to do?

I have looked at daily 5 for dummies and that helps a little, but I need the year mapped out so I can know what to work on.

What do the students do to know they are reading their books and discussing appropriately (worksheets, notebook writing, etc???) ? Any help is MUCH appreciated!!

Have you read Debbie Miller's Reading With Meaning or Elin Oliver Keene's Mosaic of Thought? They will give you a start and confidence. I reading Reading With Meaning first. It's a good read.

Lucy Calkins has just published an EXCELLENT resource for you. It is the units of study for upper grade reading workshop. It is the stuff of powerful teaching. Not cheap but worth every penny. Our school is using it and it is amazing. Here's the link:

Do you find with the UoS that you are still able to tailor it to your students? What I mean, do you feel like are using a basal or that there is flexibility. I make my own curriculum materials completely in my class which is great on the one hand but overwhelming on the other. I'm interested in UoS but don't wanna feel like I'm using a basal. Thanks!
