Does anyone have information or ideas about how they teach transitions in their classes? I'm getting ready to write a persuasive/opinion piece.

If you teach a younger grade, I'd pick out a few for them to use. When you model the piece, or write one together, (however you do it), you would muse outloud about needing a transition phrase at the beginning of the middle paragraphs and the last paragraph to make it flow. Then you would go to the few that you previously selected.

I'd add on to the choices the higher up in grade level you go. By high school, I would think that a list of useful transition phrases might work.


I have a select few that the kids work with at first. When they meet with me, they use a highlighter to show where they used the transition phrase. I haven't got my flashdrive here, or I'd pull up a few for you. But you could "google" a transitions for persuasives and get some.

My sixth graders already know transitions, but they think they need to go everywhere! When we prepare prewrites, I have students draw a box and write TW inside for transition word. It is a remedial step, but eventually they make the connection and put them in by themselves.
