I have a friend at a nearby school whos school has begun using the Comprehension Toolkit. The 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade teachers are all starting at the same spot. She is concerned as a 4th grade teacher that next year she won't be able to use the units because they have already used them in 3rd grade. Do any of you have enough experience with this to suggest a solution? It seems like a valid enough problem.

We've had the same discussion at my school...as I'm guessing most who use The Comprhension Toolkit have. I found a document, I believe it was created by a school in Florida, that has other mentor texts listed to go with each lesson...so that as the kids go on to the next grade level, alternative texts are used. I thought I hit the jackpot when I found this document! I have it at school. I can scan it and post it.

I googled "alternative texts used with the Comprehension Toolkit" and found the document I have. Here's the link.

Hope this helps.

Does your friend have other texts available at school? I think that once she becomes familiar with the strategies in the comprehension toolkit, she can use them with any text - including textbooks, magazine articles, class novels, etc. After all, the whole point is to transfer the skills to whatever you read to deepen your understanding.
