My 5th grade granddaughter has been a voracious reader forever. She's read tons of complete series - mostly wizard and mystical stuff. She used to come to my house for a weekend with a couple of books and then beg to go to the library. Recently, I've noticed when she stays at my house, she's not bringing any books. She has no iphone or iPad distracting her. I'm thinking she might bored with the type of books she's read before. I have tried to introduce some of the classics, i.e. Betsy Tacy, The Secret Garden, Ballet Shoes, plus non-fiction, but she not interested. How can I rekindle her passion and get her to expand her reading interests?

If you are looking for a new type...My students recommended a book called The War that Save my Life. Perhaps a different genre will help?

Could it be that she is beginning to go through puberty? The effects on the brain can sometimes be astounding.

I agree with OPs that a new genre may help. Her interests are probably changing. Some current favorites with my students: Towers Falling, Wonder, A Series of Unfortunate Events (12 in the series), Smile… Try searching tween book lists.

Finally, try reading one with her. Tweens thrive on discussion, especially if they feel that they are taken seriously.
