I am trying to put together an all-inclusive Proportional Reasoning Unit Slides presentation. I am working on the section where we look at deciding whether or not verbal descriptions, graphs, tables, and equations represent proportional situations. I have the graphs, tables, and equations portion completed and am working on the verbal description section. How do I explain to students how to tell if a verbal description is proportional without having them convert it into one of the other forms (table, graph, or equation)?

An example of two of a verbal description? Maybe one that is proportional and one that is not.

Also, is there a reason for students not to test by trying to convert to another representation if they are not sure? It seems to me that, if a particular description is unclear, testing makes sense.
