Our mental health system is a disaster

DH has early onset dementia. Diagnosed at 51. He's now 57 and having behavior problems - running away from me, severe anxiety and some delusions and paranoia. His regular doctor was helping with meds, but has decided it's now past his ability to help. DH's neurologist isn't willing to help with meds either, and referred us on to a "crisis center" for an appointment with a psychiatrist for help. The soonest appointment was THREE MONTHS away.

I took DH to the ER during a really bad episode. ER doctor agreed that something needs to be done sooner. He gave me another referral. That one is only 8-10 weeks out, but of course the first appointment I made is now within that time range. The ER doctor was so kind, and told me to call him if I couldn't get anything sooner. I called him. He tried - bless him - but he couldn't get anything sooner either.

I know of someone else who's aunt called the national suicide hotline. They were busy and said they'd call back. After a month, there was still no callback.

If this was an appointment for me, I'd give up right now. I just feel so bad for all the other people who really need help, and it feels impossible to get any. 3 months is an eternity.

Forgot to add that I'm not looking for any advice - we'll manage and limp along until the appointment in January. But it's so hard to see someone you love having such a difficult time.

That is so ridiculous! I'm sorry that you are being treated this way. I hope you can sneak into a cancellation.

bout your DH and his diagnosis. Keep being the squeaky wheel. If you call frequently, they may create an opening for you!

I hope you can get in sooner, and maybe one of those doctors could prescribe something to get you through until the appointment.

Not Sure Where You Live

We have an appointment with a Geriatric Doctor for my mom on 2/25/22. It is the soonest they can see her. She was diagnosised with Alzheimer. Here are 2 Memory Centers in my area, Philadelphia, PA.

https://pennmemorycenter.org/
https://www.abingtonhealth.org/servi...senior-health/

I would try googling your area hospitals especially a university hospital in your area and look for service related to seniors. I know your DH is not a senior but they may be able to help you. I was also able to use resources from https://www.nia.nih.gov/health/alzheimers and get free pamphlets. They do have dementia info too.

I hope you were put on a wait list and your DH can be seen earlier. Sending prayers..

I’m so sorry for you. I know what it’s like caring for someone with dementia—a very very hard road. Bless you.

your husband is not receiving the timely care that he needs. I feel his regular doctor needs to care for him until his appointment in January with the specialist. Sending prayers for both of you.

I am sorry that you and your DH are going through this terrible situation. After dealing with my DH's cancer and my own illness in January and July I do know that there is a definite problem with our health care system where we live. sending you positive thoughts, and prayers to help you both get through this very difficult time.

Does your area have a senior citizen office? My parents have both utilized their services with placements. It's similar to CPS, but for seniors.

Prayers for you and DH. You are so right, mental health care is ridiculous. My DD waited for months to see a nurse practitioner in a psyc office.
