I have a chance to be on our new principal search committee. Anyone out there have some good questions I should ask potential candidates. I teach 1st in a med sized private school.

In light of the economy, what plan would you put in place to:
a. Keep our school financially sound (or make our school financially sound)
b. Ensure that our enrollment remains at a level that would keep us a viable entity
c. Advertise or market the good things happening at the school

Off the top of my head:

-What is your vision for our school?
-What do you offer as a leader?
-What educational programs do you support?
-How have you supported teachers in the past?
-What do you do if two teachers have a disagreement/falling out?
-What do you do if you disagree with a teacher?

Lastly, the simple, "What is your view of the child?" may reveal much about this person's intentions and philosophy.

Best of luck in this process!

I recently served on a principal selection committee. It's a tough job! Good Luck!
Here's a couple questions off the top.

What is your philosophy of discipline?
How can you create a culture of academic excellence in a school?
How have you done that in previous jobs?

I did this a couple of years back. I felt the questions I was given to ask just weren't helping me to get to know the person. I asked our HR person if I could write some scenarios. For example, there is a student in the bathroom that won't come out OR an irate parent is angry that you called his child into the office to discuss behavior etc. Basically I thought of common tough situations in elementary schools. Once we incorporated these into the interviewing process, I really felt like we got somewhere. Good luck!
