3D palm tree for bulletin board- HELP!
Old 07-31-2011, 09:27 AM

Clip to ScrapBook #1

So, I have scoured YouTube, and the net- to include PT, but cannot find a way for me to make a not-so-craftsy-teacher-friendly 3D palm tree for my hallway bulletin board.

I've seen the directions for free-standing palms and palms that you can hang from the ceiling, but I want to attach mine to the BB and make it look 3D.

Any advice/ thoughts/ help?

TIA

I used an umbrella... i cut it where i wanted it to be up against the board.... covered it with green felt and then used twisted butcher paper to create the trunk.. I wish I still had a picture of it. If you do it, pop the umbrella all the way open and super glue or gorilla glue it in the open position before you cut it!

Here's an Idea

Totally thinking off the top of my head...

What if you did one similar to a free standing tree? Get a cardboard tube (something bigger around and sturdier than a wrapping paper tube...maybe a mailer tube from the post office??) and cut it in half so you have a long half-tube (that way you can attach the flat side to the bulletin board). Cut the bottoms off paper lunch sacks (or even smaller paper sacks if you can find them) and push them all on the tube, so it looks like bark. I would just cut the palm leaves out of paper and staple them to where they stick out and look 3D.

Not sure if this would work. You will probably have to try it and problem solve as you go, but it may give you a starting point. Good luck!!

I just used brown butcher paper! I rolled it then crumpled it and shaped it as best I could then attached to the bulletin board with a stapler and added my leaves to the top. This tree is taped to the wall.

Yeah, mine is similar to Pooh's. I'm not crafty either, so if I can do then you can do it!

Here's the picture I posted recently of my classroom door. I have the leaves on the frame, but you could easily just put them on the top of the trunk. Just take the bulletin board paper and cut it half (lengthwise), then "crinkle" it accordian style (side to side) to make the trunk. When you're glueing the leaves, let them "wave" so they're not flat.

I really like your palm tree! Cute as can be!! I was interested in where you got the jeep on your door. I have looked EVERYWHERE and I cannot find them. I would order them if I could find them ! Thanks!

A friend used small brown crunched up lunch bags with the top folded down to make the trunk. You can use as many as will fit on your BB. (I have also seen dryer vent that is spray painted brown used for the trunk.) Then add silk ferns from the Dollar Tree for the fronds. It looks good.
