How should one handle if I email parents about their child's behavior or academic issues and they show no response at all in a return email?

Let admin know. Also follow up with a phone call if possible. It might be that the email went into junk/spam. I've had friends that I correspond with regularly ask me why I didn't respond to an email. Turns out it was in spam.

I have the mail tracker extension, so I can at least see if itís read. I would say 80-90% of my emails are read but the parent never responds. On my communication log I just not that the email was read and no response was given. If I have to contact about the same issue again, I would call the next time.

I would resend with a cc to my principal to have proof that I tried to contact twice.

I don't do phone calls because I have had too many parents like about the conversation.

I donít do phone calls either honestly (and especially now with being virtual). Having said that, is there a place you can document? We have a place on our attendance system where teachers can note communication, concerns, etc. Others can see the notes.

I usually send another email and say I will reach out by phone if I do not hear back I always add in ďkindly respond so I know this email was receivedĒ. I also let the student know and ask them to ask adult if they received it. I use a google form to log my interactions. I create the form and then fill it out myself (just hit preview and it lets you).

Just make sure you're documenting...

These are the same parents who will come back at the end of the year and say, "But the teacher didn't tell me...".

If you're emailing, cc the principal. If you're calling, just make a note of the date and time you called and the outcome. You might also want to have someone else call or make the call from a different number. I've had parents block all of the school phone numbers.

There's nothing you can do to engage a parent who is completely disinterested anything related to their child and/or school. Reach out, document, let it go.
